I get asked quite frequently “How old do you have to be to get acupuncture?” If you’ve ever wondered yourself, then the answer is that anyone and everyone could benefit from acupuncture treatments, from infants to the elderly. There are no age restrictions or height requirements when it comes to this amazing medicine!
As a matter of fact children, especially those under the age of 7, respond quite well to acupuncture and massage for many common ailments that over the counter medications and Western medications don’t do well to treat.
So what are these common ailments? They are:
- Cold and flu symptoms like fever, sore throat, cough
- Digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea and vomiting
- Headaches and other body aches and pains
- Ear infections
- Teething symptoms
At Vitality Acupuncture we offer Shonishin, Tuina massage and pediatric tinctures. The combination of these modalities can greatly help children feel better when they aren’t feeling their best.
But what are these modalities?
Shonishin is a specialized form of treatment for infants and children that originated in the Osaka region of Japan and became renowned in the 1700s. It is a gentle, non-insertion acupuncture treatment technique that is both relaxing and comfortable. This specialized form of treatment is great for babies, young children under the age of 7, and even adults who are sensitive to needles too!
Tuina massage originated in China and can be dated back more than 2,000 years to the Sui and Tang Dynasty (581-907 C.E.). Babies and young children can get sick fairly quickly. And the Chinese discovered many pediatric massage protocols that are quite effective in treating common ailments of children. This form of massage is also very comforting for children and easy to do at home. Our acupuncturist would be more than happy to share these techniques with parents to do at home.
Lastly, pediatric tinctures can be a great substitute for certain over the counter medications. The line of tinctures we carry at Vitality Acupuncture are glycerin based which means the medicine is quickly absorbed into the blood stream the second it is administered. And they taste good, too! Your child may be prescribed a tincture if he/she suffers from cold and flu symptoms, cough, allergies, ear infection, bedwetting, and/or teething symptoms.
